Quarter-acre lots from one decade

County records date nine in ten Harmony Hills homes to the 1960s, and the lots came out close to the same size: half of them fall between 0.22 and 0.29 acre. That is our Large yard, $60 a visit weekly or $65 every other week. About one lot in eight is 0.20 acre or less and pays our Standard price. A few streets run bigger. The typical lot on Grey Oak is right at 0.35 acre.

You can tell where you are by the street names. Serenade, Tango, Fantasia, Sonnet and Summertime fit the Harmony name, and another set borrows mountain names: Mount Capote, Mount Ida and Morey Peak. Wherever you are, every visit is mow, edge and blow.

Brush and bulky pickup, by the city code

San Antonio picks up brush twice a year and bulky items twice a year, on a week it sets for each address. A door hanger gives you 7 to 10 days of notice. The code is strict about the pile:

• Not too early: a pile out more than a week before your scheduled week breaks the rules (Sec. 14-16).
• Not too late: so does a pile left more than a week after the pickup.
• Your own yard only: the brush has to come from the home it sits in front of. It goes at the curb, never in an alley.
• Size: 8 cubic yards at most, within 8 feet of the curb.

Between pickups, the green organics cart takes grass, leaves and small trimmings every week. No plastic bags.

The Greater Harmony Hills Neighborhood Association is a voluntary group that says it represents more than 3,500 homes. Its schools are Harmony Hills, Larkspur and Castle Hills elementary schools, Eisenhower Middle School and Churchill High School, plus Holy Spirit Catholic School.
