Big lots, old trees

The town’s history page says building started with a house on Sequoia in 1951, and that residents voted to incorporate in a neighbor’s garage in October 1955. The town still describes itself as mostly private homes on large lots with an abundance of trees, and the county records agree: the typical single-family lot here is 0.44 acre.

On Fleetwood, Donella, Yosemite and Sagecrest the typical lot runs 0.44 to 0.46 acre. That is our Extra large yard: $70 a visit weekly, $75 every other week or $95 for a one-time cut. On Meadowbrook, Sequoia, Sunway and El Cerrito Circle most lots pass half an acre, so we take a quick look and give you one fixed price per visit. The typical lot on Antler Circle and Navato Boulevard is about 0.17 acre, our Standard yard at $50 a visit weekly.

A big lot is a good lot to mow. There is room for the kids and the dog, and shade from trees the town works to protect: Hollywood Park calls itself a Tree City USA community.

Town rules, not San Antonio’s

Hollywood Park is its own town with its own code, so the San Antonio rules you may have read about do not apply here.

• Grass: anything over 12 inches counts as weeds (Sec. 30-136). The town gives seven days’ notice, and one notice covers a full year (Sec. 30-137).
• Brush: Tiger Sanitation picks it up once a month, on the week the town sets for your street, up to 3 cubic yards per home. Only brush a resident cut can go out, not a contractor’s, and not more than 10 days early (Sec. 30-138).
• Leaves: bagged leaves do not go with the brush. They go out with the weekly trash, up to 3 bags of 30 pounds or less.
• Water: SAWS runs the water system here, so SAWS watering stages apply. The town adds its own rule: no sprinklers from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., any day (Sec. 74-112).
• Trees: every trimming job needs a town permit, oaks can only be trimmed from July through January, and the trimmer hauls the brush away.

We keep the grass well under 12 inches, edge the drive, walks and curb, and blow the clippings off before we leave.

Deer, Voigt Park and Town Hall

Anyone who lives here knows the deer. The town has its own Deer Committee, and its code bans feeding them except under narrow rules: on your own property, single servings, no more than four deer at a time and never by hand (Sec. 10-176). Voigt Park and the Voigt Center on El Portal have the town pool, tennis courts and a playground, and Town Hall is on Mecca Drive. We also mow in Shavano Park and Castle Hills.
